A WARM WELCOME FROM STEVEN
As the new Chief Partnerships Officer, I am pleased to welcome
you to the next issue of Macmillan Matters, designed to bring
the latest Macmillan news to our closest supporters first.
I want to thank you for your commitment and positive energy, as we continue
to build our new strategy, and prepare to take the next steps in providing
world-class support to everyone living with and beyond cancer in the UK.
Douglas Macmillan started Macmillan over 100 years ago, to 'strive for betterness' for
people living with cancer. We continue this focus on not just the cancer treatment, but on
supporting the person going through cancer, and all the ways in which it affects their life.
Sadly, the news of both HM The King, and HRH The Princess of Wales going through cancer
treatment is a stark reminder that we can all be affected by cancer, and that we need to
build a system of care that can support every one of us in that vital moment of need.
We know that we need to do more to reach each and every person, no
matter who or where they are in the UK. But together, we have a unique
opportunity to harness our collective power through the extraordinary leverage
of a community of partners, healthcare professionals and people living with
cancer who demand nothing but the best cancer care for us all. We also
know that every donation made by our supporters is a personal statement
that you too want to influence the cancer support system for the better.
Macmillan have been innovating since we began - indeed the first Macmillan nurse
was the very first specialist nurse in the country. We must continue to innovate and
adapt our approach to stay relevant and to be sustainable against these significant
challenges. This innovation will take many forms - in the investment of new partners
who can significantly improve patient experience and support the healthcare
workforce now, and in how we drive long-term improvement in cancer outcomes
for the 1 in 2 of us who will experience a cancer diagnosis. Our experience in cancer
innovation has also shown how this paves the way for how all of healthcare can
become more effective and fairer and can put the experience of patients at its heart.
I could not be more excited to share further outcomes of our strategy
in the coming months, and to ask you individually to consider how
you can be an even bigger part of Macmillan's future.
Thanks for taking the time to read this magazine. We hope that there are some brilliant
ways for you to get involved with us, for the betterness of people living with cancer.
With best wishes
Steven McIntosh
