BUILDING CANCER SUPPORT
INTO COMMUNITIES
Building vital cancer support havens
Cancer patient experience has shown us that
without a doubt, local Macmillan Cancer Support
Centres provide not just a physically accessible
space for wellbeing and support, but also act as
a hub for community-based support groups. This
helps create fully inclusive cancer care for the wider
area, specifically working with minority groups.
Following a full review of Macmillan's services
across the UK, three priority areas have been
identified as needing a significant increase in
both hospital-based and community support.
Transformational new centres
Macmillan have committed to fundraising
for three transformational builds in 2024, in
York, Stockport and Ashford - Surrey.
All three builds have been designed in collaboration
with specialist architects, cancer care professionals
and, most importantly, patients, to ensure we provide
custom-designed spaces dedicated to the care and
wellbeing of those in the local community who need it.
Each space will give new levels of in-person
and virtual support through providing:
• A calm, welcoming and accessible non-clinical space
for patients and their families and carers to use
• Drop-in support for those moments when
you 'just need to speak to someone'
• Welfare benefits advice for those who
are struggling with financial concerns as
a result of their cancer diagnosis
• Wellbeing and support services,
including complementary therapies.
• Emotional and psychological support,
from individual to group sessions
• Support groups with a dedicated space to meet
• Community outreach programmes, with specialist
staff dedicated to working with local communities
currently with less access to cancer support.
